About the Illinois Mathematics Lab

Mission
The Illinois Mathematics Lab (formerly Illinois Geometry Lab) fosters opportunities for University of Illinois undergraduates in mathematical research, experimentation, and visualization. Each fall and spring semester, faculty members, assisted by graduate students, offer collaborative projects for small groups of undergraduates. The IML also has an active program of mathematical outreach to local schools and communities.

History of IML
With grant support from the National Science Foundation, the Illinois Geometry Lab (IGL) was founded by Professor Jayadev Athreya and graduate student Anton Lukyanenko in Fall 2011 with the vision of providing a home for undergraduate research projects in geometry and visualization under the guidance of faculty mentors.  Within a few short years and thanks to grant support and substantial commitment by the faculty, graduate students, and alumni of the Department of Mathematics, IGL expanded to include research projects in all areas of mathematics, mathematical outreach to schools and to the public, and summer opportunities for high school students and undergraduates. To better represent the wide scope of its activities, Illinois Geometry Lab changed its name in 2024 to Illinois Mathematics Lab.

Illinois Mathematics Lab is currently funded by the Department of Mathematics and by generous gifts from private donors.
