Research

The Illinois Mathematics Lab (previously known as Illinois Geometry Lab) provides invaluable experience to students, exposing them to multiple facets of mathematics research prior to graduation. Through participation in IML, students gain skills in research, collaboration, and communication that make them more well-rounded learners and attractive candidates to potential employers.

  • Research projects: Each fall and spring semester, select mathematics faculty members lead small groups of undergraduate students in discovery-based learning projects that tackle interesting questions in pure and applied mathematics. Students learn how to collaborate with other researchers, meet deadlines, and look at everyday problems through the lens of an experienced mathematician.
  • Publications: IML research groups often publish their work in research journals, so students can gain valuable insights in the the academic publishing process.
  • Products: Some IML research groups have create software and visualizations that they share with the relevant research communities, providing students with substantive content for portfolios and experience presenting ideas and products.
